Threatened by your Arrival

Writer's picture: Apostle TG GardnerApostle TG Gardner

In the second chapter of the book of Matthew, we explore a significant moment in the story of Jesus Christ's birth, illustrating how King Herod was initially unaware of its importance. It wasn't until the Magi, or Wise Men, arrived in Jerusalem that Herod learned about the new king. These men, likely experts in ancient prophecies and astronomy, were seeking information, asking, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews?” They were not merely curious; they were on a mission to honor this important child. The Magi's arrival in Jerusalem posed a direct challenge to Herod's authority. Known for his ruthless tactics to maintain power, Herod began to feel uneasy about a rival being referred to as “king of the Jews.” His discomfort quickly escalated into paranoia as he contemplated the implications of their question. Viewing Jesus as a threat, Herod was motivated by jealousy and insecurity. Recognizing how this news could disrupt his reign, he determined to take extreme measures to eliminate any threats to his rule. Herod called upon the chief priests and scribes to uncover where this prophesied king was born, which led him to Bethlehem. In his fear of losing power and confronting the unknown, Herod infamously ordered the execution of all male infants in Bethlehem. This brutal action revealed his desperation, demonstrating how far he would go to protect his position and suppress his fear of competition. The story poignantly captures Herod’s emotional turmoil, highlighting themes of jealousy, fear, and insecurity in response to Jesus’ foretold kingship. It encourages us to reflect on how often we overlook significant moments until something or someone else prompts us to recognize their true value. There are those who may feel threatened by your presence because others see your importance and worth.

More Grace,

APTG
